The Twelve Guardians are powerful demi-gods created by Gaia and Syndel to watch over the lands of Medius in the gods' absence due a non-interference pledge.
The Twelve Guardians are ageless sentient animals with vast magical power. Each guardian has a natural animal form but also possesses the ability to shape-shift into a mortal form (Human, Jakkai, Fairy, Khamega, etc) as a disguise to walk amongst mortals without attracting attention; however, in both their natural and disguise forms, the symbol of their magical element is displayed visibly somewhere on their body.
Culture[]
Guardians were tasked to watch over Medius in the gods' stead. As such, some cultures choose to worship them rather than the creator gods, who are seen as "out of reach" due to their non-interference; this is notably the case for Jakkai communities. Jakkai villages all revere one or more of the Guardians, such as Rhea's village with Fuzen'ro the Bat; they build statues of them and pay tribute through ceremonies.
Guardians can intervene in Medius and make public appearances; they might reveal their true forms in broad daylight, or stay in their disguise forms as to not be recognized. They are able to perform miracles, as well as curses. Some regions of Medius are known to be home to specific Guardians: St. Curtis is historically the home of Melli the Fire Bee. However, they can also keep their location secret, including to other Guardians.
A Guardian's reputation can affect that of their animal kin. Rabbits are seen as symbol of bad luck due to their association with Toski, while Mortori Birds were considered bad then good omens due to Meeros' "PR work" of advocating their qualities.[1] A Jakkai village worshiping a specific Guardian might consider their associated animal sacred.
Most Guardians remained neutral during the Great War between Heaven and Hell, even when it was being fought on Medius, as they are the creations of both Gaia and Syndel. However, Siara the Lynx and Melli the Bee sided with Heaven whilst Broxis the Wolf and Toski the Rabbit sided with Hell.
Guardians[]
There are three guardians for each of the four main magical elements, which accounts for the twelve total.

Milothys the Dolphin[]
Milothys remained neutral during the Great War; however, he's said to love Angels.[2] He is worshiped by Jakkai of the Dragon Island Archipelago.[3]
According to Meeros, Milothys is said to live on the southern coast of Fragaria at Port Dorade. As a Water Guardian, he might have some influence on curses cast by Toski and Broxis.
Milothys seems to be featured in a children's book called The Winter Solstice, along with the other Water Guardians.[4]

Broxis the Wolf[]
Broxis is one of the four Guardians who chose to fight in the Great War. He fought on the side of Hell.
It's been revealed that he cursed Kieri's twin brother Kazai, soon after the two got separated; he'd been cursing people in a small mountain village in Nirveus.
He is worshiped by Jakkai of Nirveus, who are rivals with worshipers of Siara the Lynx.[3]

Toski the Rabbit[]
Toski was the first Guardian to be featured prominently. She is one of the four Guardians who chose to fight in the Great War. She fought on the side of Hell and describes Angels as "self-righteous punks".
Kieri tried to stop her from robbing a shop in Farun, but Toski cursed her out of malice and ran away. However, she didn't account for Angels' higher magic resistance, unknowingly giving Kieri what would become a useful transformation ability.

Melli the Fire Bee[]
Melli is one of the four Guardians who chose to fight in the Great War. She fought on the side of Heaven.
She makes her home in St. Curtis which is famous for its honey. During the festival she runs an Archery stand at the Midway for anyone to test their marksmanship. Melli is noted for "hating Demons about as much as Toski hates Angels".
Melli was killed by Moonshade, who had apparently found a way to harm a Guardian.

Siara the Lynx[]
Siara is one of the four Guardians who chose to fight in the Great War. She fought on the side of Heaven.
There have been hints of a familial relationship between Siara and Heathcliff "Cliff" Sinclair, even though the latter insists she is not his "grandma".[5] Siara granted Cliff the "Siara Special" spell, a Fire spell so powerful that Cliff cannot cast it alone. Following the birth of Cliff's daughter Florina, he expressed worry that Siara might want to meet his "kitten", but stated he had no way to contact her and wouldn't worry about that yet.
Meeros describes her as a "loo-loo", and hints that she might not be pleased to see Demons and Angels together.[6] She is worshiped by Jakkai of Nirveus, who are rivals with worshipers of Broxis the Wolf.[3]

Meeros the Mortori Bird[]
Meeros remained neutral during the Great War.
He is somewhat of a prankster and attention-seeker. He is noted to have a particular liking for St. Curtis' Spring Flower Festival and enjoys flying to the city through the Southern Pass over the travelers, impressing them with a magic light-show as he goes. He's also been implied to have a particular reaction to certain types of couples.[7]

Fuzen'ro the Bat[]
Fuzen'ro remained neutral during the Great War.
They make their home in the Fuzen'ro Forest which is where Rhea's Jakkai village is located. The local Jakkai hold a festival in Fuzen'ro's honor every year; ruins in the forest, including a statue of the Guardian, show that worship of Fuzen'ro dates back to ancient times.

Moku the Snake[]
Moku remained neutral during the Great War.
It is possible he lived in the Dragon Island Archipelago, as his death caused a drought there.[8] He is worshiped by Jakkai of Earth Dragon Island.[3]
At some point, Moonshade was able to kill him and steal his powers for his own.[9] Moonshade is a descendant of Moku; presumably his son, as his daughter Rhea is stated in the Book of Records to be Moku's grandchild. She's said to always have had some affinity for Moku, owning imagery of him whereas her village worshiped Fuzen'ro the Bat.
Moku's name is one half of Mokurynn's, possibly hinting at some unknown relation.

Jaspin the Mole[]
Jaspin remained neutral during the Great War. They are worshiped by Jakkai of Fragaria.[3]
Trivia[]
- While the Twelve Guardians operate on Medius, Angels seem to have some knowledge of them: Kazai was able to recognize Broxis's name, but didn't know who Moku, Melli[10] or Meeros[11] were. It is possible their knowledge (or at least Kazai's) only extends to Guardians that took part in the Great War.
